's done before, the status quo has not worked. we cannot afford four more years of president obama. we're not going to have four more years of obama. >>> wednesday, president obama and mitt romney meet in the first presidential debate. the news hours jim lehr moderates. watch and engage with c-span including the live debate preview at 7 p.m. eastern, debate at 9, and post debate, calls, reactions, e-mails, and tweets. follow our coverage on c-span, c-span radio, and online at c-span.org. now on booktv, peter takes about why our economy produces great wealth and great poverty at the same time. he offers suggestions on how to improve the conditions on tens of millions of americans living below the poverty line. this is about 50 minutes. >> well, thank you so much, debra. i am totally delighted to be here and thanks to busboys and poets for allowing me to be here, to talk with you, and, of course, thanks to all of you for coming. i see a lot of -- a lot of friends, some of my students are here. they already got their grades so no -- [laughter] nobody was threatened. this is -- we could sp
if you look at what they have said on this issue, both obama and romney's plans are vague. if i were moderating the debate that is coming october 3rd, i would spend about half of it asking them what would you do specifically. give us the diagnosis of the plan -- [applause] and tell us what you're really going to do. and part of that question is there has to be a willingness to compromise, and there has to be an innate willingness to do things that are painful for your side. i'm going to stop there, and we'll do questions. one more story. remember years ago the head of simon & schuster after i had published one of my books took me to dinner in new york city at one of these restaurants where you would never want to go where you have to pay. [laughter] and he said what's your next book going to be about in and i said, oh, well, i haven't decided. i'm going to do some thinking, some reading, some research. and he looked at me and said, what? i said, yeah, i want to do thinking, reading, reporting, weighing the alternatives, and he said why are you going to waste your time? [laughter] i s
interest in debating that, let alone fundamentally changing it. and that is therefore fine who run the society. it then becomes the coin toss. do we like mr. romney? we like mr. obama? do we prefer republicans to democrats? is the system cannot be debated, because everybody agrees the two parties will there be focused elsewhere on things like whether you can have a gun in the back of your truck or whether you do or do not approve of gay marriage, or a whole host of other issues whose importance i am not disputing, but issues get us away from this thorny problem of how economics and politics are articulate and there's a desire to sit in a society that that simply be ruled out of order. >> the five corporations that dominate what people in this country see here and read have perfected the art of propaganda in manufacturing consent while simultaneously criticizing dissent. but i want you to talk about the very origin of this, which could be traced to the much revered and in my view, much overrated founding fathers of any political rally. people talk about them in hushed tones. but let
about obama is his campaign in 2008 broke all the rules. giving speeches in a stadium and blowing off democratic interest groups who invite him to debate. john kerri wanted to endorse him and he said no. he is on the internet and social media and all this crazy stuff nobody had ever done before. i said to david axelrod i don't have a better idea for how he could have done this. why didn't you break the rules in washington and david axelrod's answer is because it is washington, not america. there really are sort of a prisoner to the tyranny of 60 votes and obama really does believe were certainly did believe that if we get the policy right the policies will take care of themselves. he said that was blowing down from the top. they took this almost perverse pride that we will put our head down and do the right thing. the best example that i tell in the book, democrats your heads will explode when you read this, tax cuts -- you may remember in 2008 george bush this stimulus. it was $180 billion and sent everybody a check. love, george bush. here is the money. obama did the same thing exce
the gun. they might not be used to them may not have the same temper his barack obama does and is not fair to jump at them. i remember feeling bad after budget debate -- remember when the government almost shut down? don't worry, it's coming back with the same being every night. they would all get together and talk about whatever and i was getting pretty bored with the whole situation because it was always a tenet night and nothing much doing. i would try to get the best angle and there was no one one in west wing at 10:00 at night. i am in in the roosevelt room trying to get a great shot of speaker of boehner but it wasn't fair to those guys. is kind of startling when they are coming out of around. he doesn't really know who i am and doesn't know exactly what i do and hopping out of cupboards with the camera. for that heels gets it. it is like arun is a scammer but you have to think about how it's impacting other folks because it's kind of a precious thing. this is not set in stone. like i said if there is a president romney i am not sure he will continue the practice and even more so tha
